FOX have released another preview to their medical dramedy show “House M.D.“. On the November 18 episode called “Emancipation”, House and the team will handle a case where a young factory manager drowns her lungs in liquid that causes her to have delusions. Apart from the medical reasons, they too must find out what the teenager has been doing to herself.

The girl patient informs House and team that she is an emancipated minor living on her own and supporting herself, and has ever since her parents passed away. The team begins treatment for suspected heart problems, and House emphasizes that they keep it strict to the medical procedures of finding what’s the cause of the disease and not treating them for “chronic idiocy.” But when Kutner chooses to sympathize with the patient rather than follow House’s directions, he and the team find out the hard way that the girl may not be telling them the truth.

Meanwhile, Foreman asks for House’s permission to work on a clinical trial and House rejects his proposal. In an effort to prove himself capable of working without House’s supervision, Foreman takes on his own pediatric case. But when the unexplained illness brings the child to the brink of death, Foreman is left questioning his ability to work free from House’s custody.

In the next “House M.D.” episode which is simply titled “Joy”, House’s life is about to change through his romance with Cuddy. House finds out that Cuddy wants to adopt a baby from a birth mother who is about to deliver the baby in two weeks but develops a mysterious disease. As a doctor and potential mother, Cuddy seeks help from House in the case.

Another medical mystery is found when a man sweats blood that causes him to have recurring blackouts and time lapses. They soon find out that the man’s 12-year-old daughter has been experiencing sleepwalking spells. The man’s condition deteriorates and his daughter also begins to experience more symptoms.

“Joy” will be aired on October 28 on FOX at 8/7c.

Two clips from “House” 5.05 titled “Lucky Thirteen” are available. One clip shows Thirteen confronting the woman she has a one-night stand with and the other one on House interrogating Wilson’s life post the death of his wife.

After told by House that the patient brought in the hospital by Thirteen has actually been trying to reach house for medical help several times, Thirteen starts to question the motif of the patient when sleeping with her. The woman said that she was trying to talk to Thirteen that night but did not expect Thirteen to be ‘aggressive’.

Meanwhile, House who hires a detective to spy on his staff and Wilson, asks some questions to Wilson in person. This drives Wilson to admit that he has started dating again, with a prostitute.

“Lucky Thirteen” will be aired on October 21.

Focusing on the time when House finds out that his father has passed away, the footage shows glimpses on how his diagnostic team and friends try to make reluctant House coming to his grieving mother’s aid and console her. Joined by Wilson, House finally gets in the car and embarks on a journey home without losing his sarcastic side at all.

Aside from dealing with his father’s death, in the fourth episode of the fifth season called “Birthmarks”, House will be faced with another mysterious case. Away from his team because he has to attend his father funeral, he must help his team on making the differential diagnosis on a young Chinese woman who collapsed while searching for her birth parents. This episode will not be aired until October 14.

Coming back with its fifth season on September 16, the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning medical drama about an eccentric medical genius who heads a team of diagnosticians at the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital and solves rare medical cases is aired every Tuesday at 8 P.M. on FOX. It stars Hugh Laurie, Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer and others.

HOUSE’s Season Episode 3, “Adverse Events” airing Tuesday, Sept. 30 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Last week’s House episode “Not Cancer” introduced to Michael Weston who plays Lucas, a detective hired by House to do all the snooping he wants. He is back again in this week’s episode “Adverse Events”. I like the character a lot and I hope that they will give him a longer story arc so that we can see more of that interaction.

Episode Synopsis: “Adverse Events” - House and the team take on the case of a struggling artist (guest star Breckin Meyer) who has been painting bizarre portraits. His undiagnosed illness is distorting his perception, threatening to undermine his career, his relationships and everything else in his life. The team soon finds out that he hasn’t sold anything lately and is on three separate drug trials to pay the bills. House must unlock the puzzle of which drugs are causing which symptoms before it’s too late. Meanwhile, House continues to have private investigator Lucas Douglas (guest star Michael Weston) dig up dirt on everyone on his team, including Taub who is having trouble in his marriage.

(S05E02) Everyone, meet Lucas. Lucas, meet everyone.

Let’s get to know this young man, shall we? He’s in his mid-30’s and a private detective. He doesn’t think he’s a good private dick, but in reality he really is and there’s a possibility he just puts on a show of being inept. He can be an ass at times, as seen during his introductory moment to the Princeton-Plainsboro staff, and he can also be a bit too honest. In truth, he is very similar to one Dr. Gregory House, who has hired Lucas to check-up on Wilson after his best friend decided to shun him.

There is one difference between House and Lucas…Lucas is likable. That, and he seems to look at the world in a more positive manner than House does. And yet, that cranky old bastard likes Lucas for some reason. Is House going soft? Is he starting to realize the error of his ways? Is the world coming to an end? Am I asking too many questions? For answers to this and a recap of this week’s episode jump ahead.

There is no one true reason why House likes the company of Lucas, even though he denies it. Perhaps he’s lonely…even more lonely than when Wilson was his only friend in the hospital. Or, it could be that Lucas just has a different perspective, a potentially more truthful perspective, than Wilson did. When you look at all of their accumulated meetings, Wilson was the rug House walked all over. Lucas is more of House’s equal and may be given more respect.

Oh, there’s still a bit of weakness in Lucas. For instance, his non-insistence that House pay him for his services. I believe that the doctor owes the private detective about $8000. The demand for the money isn’t there for two reasons. One, Lucas knows that House won’t pay him a dime for his services. The other, he seems to be enjoying his time around House. He considers it a challenge.

Lucas also presents a new avenue to the way House diagnoses the weekly medical mystery. Take this week’s conundrum: patients who received organ transplants from the same person are now dying. Instead of the need for House’s team to break into someone’s place of residence Lucas does the job for them, and a more thorough job at that. He was also the one who found another DNA connection (in the form of a young child) to one of the organ recipients who had passed away. Definitely helpful. Whether or not it’s useful is another story.

The most important thing that Lucas brings to the table, besides a thicker beard than House has ever had, is a new avenue for Greg’s epiphanies. This is particularly important to House since it looks like he and Wilson are permanently broken up (for the time being). House is a brilliant diagnostician but he tends to have trouble putting all of the pieces together quick enough to come to a solution. Hence, the reason for the Greek chorus that follows him around the halls of Princeton-Plainsboro. He needs that voice of reason, that nonsensical debate on something unrelated, to help him put all of the pieces together. For Greg, that person is now Lucas.

Lucas reminds me of two people. On one side he has the skills and the attitude of Shawn Spencer from Psych. He also also has a bit of Dr. Lance Sweets from Bones in him. Not some of the immaturity that Sweets shows on occasion, but more of his being a sounding wall for others. When you put it all together, Lucas is a likable character who is a decent replacement for Wilson. Unfortunately, it looks like he’ll only be around for a few episodes before he gets his own series.

Moving on. Good to see House doing some doctoring this week after his little temper tantrum during the season premiere. At first it looked like that wasn’t going to happen since he continued to mull over his fate with Wilson (they should just get married already!) at the beginning of the episode. Still, he had time to do other things while trying to convince everyone that the patient of the week had cancer (which he eventually determined that she did not have). Things like spying on Wilson, and also working on getting a new friend. His “interview” with Dr. Laibson was one of the lighter moments of the week. As usual, he had his ‘human’ moment with the patient once the diagnosis was determined. Saying that the world wasn’t as dark as the patient thought it was came as a bit of a surprise from someone as sour as House can be.

This week’s medical mystery featured guest-star Felicia Day, who many of you now know as Penny from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. There wasn’t too much about her that really came out on screen other than the lie that she told the wife of the other patient who remained alive after the organ transplant. The lie was so quickly disavowed that there seemed no chance that she would survive the illness. At least she showed some brightness after her head was opened up and the bad part of her brain was removed. She also gave a concise analysis of House when she got her bandages off, saying that he looked sad.

By the way, speaking about this week’s diagnosis, I do have a bit of a complaint. This was the second week in a row that they pointed to cancer as the patient’s problem. Is this going to be a trend this year? Instead of lupus being the running ‘gag’ across the season each patient will be diagnosed with cancer and treated with chemotherapy. If that’s the case, then the next season will be interesting as House goes on trial for multiple malpractice suits.

Two more things before we leave you for the week. This was one of the grosser House episodes that I can remember. Not only was there a good bit of blood spilled, but we had a scene of vomiting (common place now), some brain slicing, and a surgery that required the doctors to peel off a portion of the patient’s head. The grossest, and funniest, scene starred Foreman and Kutner as they ran a test on one of the deceased patients. When all of that poop splattered over Foreman I had to avert my eyes. Ew!

Finally, where was everyone this week? For the most part it was House’s show. Yes, his staff was there, but mostly in the background this time around. Of the original crew, only Foreman had some decent screen time. Heck, Cameron was only mentioned this time around rather than seen. And Cuddy? Only one scene with her, and sitting behind her desk? What punishment are the producers wreaking over the young, male minds of America!

(S05E01) “This is Dr. House. He’s too brilliant for introductions.” – Thirteen to House’s patient of the week

Another season of House, another patient with a mysterious ailment. If there is one thing that has not changed in the five seasons that this medical procedural has aired it is the fact that someone is going to enter Princeton-Plainsboro with an illness that can’t be determined until the very last minute. It’s why House is still on the air. Well, there’s that, and then there’s the fact that Hugh Laurie is a damn fine actor. Oh, and the others on the show don’t do so badly themselves.

So, what can one viewer look forward to for this new season? If you think same-old, same-old then you would be absolutely, totally….incorrect. Because things are a-changing in Greg House’s universe — actually have been changing since the death of Amber in last season’s finale — that he can’t, or won’t, stop. The result? Well, I would be writing my own death sentence if I revealed it to you here. So, come and join me for a recap of this week’s episode.

First off, the cantankerous Dr. House. I’ve been watching some of the earlier season episodes now that they’re airing weeknights on USA and it looks like Greg has gotten grumpier over the years. This time, though, he was downright moody. For good reason, though…he feels guilty that he caused Amber’s death. Okay, he doesn’t say that until the middle of the episode, but you could certainly see it in the way he confronted Wilson after he returned after a two-month hiatus.

Their reunion was definitely not something you would have seen on an episode of 7th Heaven. For the most part, House picked up right where he had left off before Amber’s death. It was pretty clear at this point that Greg wasn’t letting his true feelings be known. Granted, he’s a cynical realist most times, but even he had to feel some sympathy, some guilt, for her death. But, nothing of the sort came out of House’s mouth. In the meantime, what came out of Wilson’s mouth was that he was leaving Princeton-Plainsboro.

From an initial look it would have seemed that Wilson was getting away from the hospital because it reminded him so much of Amber. And, that’s what most of his associates thought as well. Even Cameron believed the same thing. Since she had also lost a loved one many years ago, she took it upon herself to let him know that the pain eventually would go away and it would be best for him to stay. House also tried to convince Wilson that it was the wrong move in his slightly less comforting way.

Thing is, Wilson wasn’t leaving because of that. Nor was he leaving because he blamed House for Amber’s death. He tried to, but the medical records didn’t prove it. He was leaving because he was tired of House. Yes, tired of his best friend’s binges and mocking and fighting and…everything! It seems that Amber had given Wilson something upon her death: a pair. As he left he said one thing to House that probably even punctured that thick armor he calls skin — ‘We’re not friends anymore.’

Wow. House actually opened himself up for one brief moment and he got that news slammed down his throat. It’s not that he didn’t deserve it — I mean, he is a bastard (he even has said that about himself) — it just took place at a pretty vulnerable moment for Greg. Then again, it probably made it all more powerful for both him and the viewing audience. House isn’t giving up, though, as seen from next week’s coming attractions.

Let’s move on to House’s team, who still don’t have their names in the opening credits. They’ve run into a bit of a predicament diagnosing this week’s patient. See, House was so upset about Wilson leaving, and so intent in keeping him at the hospital, he told him he would leave Princeton-Plainsboro and not pick up his pager until his friend came to his senses. So, with no guiding light (or, as Taub said to Thirteen, their training wheels) to move the diagnosis along they were stuck as to how to treat the 37-year-old executive assistant whose heart was failing. This seemed strange to me, since most of these folks were in the same predicament last season. In the episode ‘Whatever It Takes’, House was away from the hospital treating a CIA operative. While he was out, Foreman took the reins and worked to diagnose the patient. This time, though, Foreman didn’t seem to have that same handle as he did last season. Simply put, the team was rudderless.

This didn’t stop them from coming up with an eventual diagnosis after a bit of trial and error. They even pulled a bit of chicanery that House would have been proud of (but wouldn’t admit) when they performed a biopsy on an abnormal growth of nerves after Chase said no to another surgery. Their final diagnosis: lymphoma. And, with a bit of chemotherapy the patient seemed to be getting better. However, in came House with the correct diagnosis: diffused leprosy. The pretty type — it clears up you skin. I found this to be a weird coincidence because I saw an episode from an earlier season of House last week where the diagnosis was leprosy.

Now, while it may seem that House was the focus of this episode, he was only in the first half. The rest of the episode focused on Thirteen. Now two months into her Huntington’s Disease diagnosis she has become a crusader in the fight to live to one’s potential before their death. This is what Thirteen did this week, particularly with her patient. Not only was she adamant with House and Chase she was also pretty determined to get her patient to change her life as well. It seemed to work, at first. But, as the patient got better she decided that she wanted to continue being treated as a flunky rather than living for herself.

All in all, it was a good episode to begin the fifth season of House, even though it was a tad dull. The schism between House and Wilson is a nice way to slightly shake up the status quo in a season that looks to be one of character development rather than one of revamp like last season. With Thirteen now living on borrowed time a new angle is given to her character. Hopefully, we’ll get to see some more fleshing out of Taub and Kutner as the season progresses.
